PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Senior Haley Moses (Mason) provided a 46th-minute goal to lift the Ohio Northern women's soccer team over Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) by a 1-0 scoreline in the Tartan Cup at the CMU Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears improve to 2-0-0 while the Tartans fall to 1-1-0 to start out the 2019 season.
A minute into the match, Northern escaped a potential early deficit as a CMU header rattled off the right post. Sophomore Tara Morris (Monroe) sent the ball out momentarily, but the Tartans fired another cross in, which Morris headed directly to Moses. Moses then cleared the ball to safety for ONU.
Right after halftime, Moses drew a foul just into the CMU half of the field.
Junior Sydney Leshnak (Liberty Township/Mount Notre Dame) took the ensuing free kick, sending the ball to the edge of the box. Junior Megan Breier (Plainfield, Ill./North) headed it right to Moses, who turned and uncorked a shot past the Carnegie Mellon keeper to put ONU up 1-0.
Senior goalkeeper Meagan Grierson (Dayton/Miamisburg) fended off dangerous CMU opprtunities in the 69th and 71st minutes to preserve her 34th career shutout. She was credited with six saves.
The Tartans outshot the Polar Bears 15-4. CMU also had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Ohio Northern returns to the pitch Friday for its home opener against No.15-ranked Hope (Mich.). The match is set for 3:00 p.m. at Kerscher Stadium.
