Softball sweeps OAC doubleheader at Capital 8-4 and 11-4

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Northern softball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Capital on Saturday, winning the opener 8-4 and taking the nightcap 11-4.
The Basics
- Records: Ohio Northern (20-10 overall, 9-3 OAC), Capital (10-10 overall, 5-7 OAC).
- Venue: Clowson Field - Columbus, Ohio.
Game 1 - W, 8-4
- Junior Mariana Alejandro (Gibsonburg) went 3-for-5 and senior Kaylie Griffin (Grafton/Elyria Catholic) smacked a 3-run home run to lead the Polar Bears in the opener.
- Griffin's bomb keyed a 4-run third inning that gave ONU a 4-0 lead.
- Junior Callie Rosser (Republic/Monroeville) singled home freshman Carlie Schroeder (Wapakoneta) in the fifth to make it 5-0.
- In the seventh, Schroeder scored on a ground out by Rosser and sophomore Allie Wilson (Wapakoneta) had a 2-run single to extend the lead to 8-0.
- Junior Ashley Lenser (Brookeville) took a 3-hit shutout into the bottom of the seventh, but CU would collect five consecutive 2-out hits to get within 8-4.
- ONU out-hit CU 12-9.
Game 2 - W, 11-4
- Northern scored five times in the top of the third to break a 1-1 tie and take a 6-1 lead.
- The Comets battled back to within 6-4, but ONU plated three runs in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh to ice the game.
- Rosser singled home Schroeder to make it 7-4 and Wilson followed with a 2-run single to make it 9-4 in the fifth.
- The Polar Bears scored an unearned run in the sixth and Wilson smacked a solo home run the seventh.
- Senior Kayla Runyon (Tipp City) pitched 3.2 innings of shutout ball in a relief role to earn the win and improve to 5-7 on the season.
- Wilson was 4-for-5 with 2 runs and 4 RBI in Game 2.
- ONU out-hit CU 13-9.
Notables
- Wilson finished the day 5-for-8 with a home run, 3 runs and 6 RBI, while Alejandro was 6-for-10 with 2 runs for ONU.
- Fifth-year senior Sydney Motylinski (Ida, Mich.) now has 140 career base hits and 99 career RBIs.
- Wilson, Rosser and Motylinski lead Ohio Northern in batting through 30 games this season with averages of .432, .386 and .380, respectively.
- Lenser is now 10-1 with 59 strikeouts and a 2.30 ERA in 67 innings in the circle.
- ONU is now 52-35 all-time against CU, including a 25-17 mark in Columbus.
- Ohio Northern is in its 57th season of softball. The Polar Bears are 992-670-4 all-time, a winning percentage of .597.
