KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Ohio Northern softball team wrapped up its annual spring break trip with a 6-4 record after an 8-0 victory over the University of New England (Maine) and a 5-4 loss to Fredonia State (N.Y.) on Friday.

The Basics

  • Records: Ohio Northern (6-4 overall), U. of New England (2-7 overall), Fredonia State (4-7 overall).

Game 1 - W, 8-0 (5 innings)

  • Freshman Shelby Marstellar (Lima/Bath) threw a 2-hit shutout in her first collegiate start to lead Ohio Northern in the opener.
  • The Polar Bears scored three runs in the home half of the first inning to set the tone.
  • ONU added two more in the fourth and five more in the fifth to notch the win.

Game 2 - L, 4-5

  • The Blue Devils scored three unearned runs in the home half of the sixth inning to rally from a 4-2 deficit to take a 5-4 lead.
  • With two out in the top of the seventh, Griffin and fifth-year senior Sydney Motylinski (Ida, Mich.) each reached base to get the Polar Bears in position to tie the game, but were unable to push the equalizer across.
  • Northern took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second, but FSU would answer with single runs in the second and third to tie it at 2-2.
  • Motylinski and Wilson each had RBI singles in the fifth as ONU regained a 4-2 lead.
  • ONU out-hit the FSU 10-7.
