Softball wraps up spring break trip with 6-4 record after 8-0 victory over U. of New England; 5-4 loss to Fredonia State

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Ohio Northern softball team wrapped up its annual spring break trip with a 6-4 record after an 8-0 victory over the University of New England (Maine) and a 5-4 loss to Fredonia State (N.Y.) on Friday.
The Basics
- Records: Ohio Northern (6-4 overall), U. of New England (2-7 overall), Fredonia State (4-7 overall).

Game 1 - W, 8-0 (5 innings)
- Freshman Shelby Marstellar (Lima/Bath) threw a 2-hit shutout in her first collegiate start to lead Ohio Northern in the opener.
- The Polar Bears scored three runs in the home half of the first inning to set the tone.
- ONU added two more in the fourth and five more in the fifth to notch the win.
- The game was called in the bottom of the fifth inning due to the NCAA's 8-run rule.
- Junior Callie Rosser (Republic/Monroeville) went 3-for-3 with a double, triple, two runs scored and two RBI for ONU.
- Senior Kaylie Griffin (Grafton/Elyria Catholic) was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
- Junior Ashley Lenser (Brookville) and sophomore Allie Wilson (Wapakoneta) added two hits each.
- The Polar Bears out-hit the Nor'Easters 12-2.
Game 2 - L, 4-5
- The Blue Devils scored three unearned runs in the home half of the sixth inning to rally from a 4-2 deficit to take a 5-4 lead.
- With two out in the top of the seventh, Griffin and fifth-year senior Sydney Motylinski (Ida, Mich.) each reached base to get the Polar Bears in position to tie the game, but were unable to push the equalizer across.
- Northern took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second, but FSU would answer with single runs in the second and third to tie it at 2-2.
- Motylinski and Wilson each had RBI singles in the fifth as ONU regained a 4-2 lead.
- ONU out-hit the FSU 10-7.

- Wilson and Rosser lead Ohio Northern in batting thus far this season with averages of .565 and .464, respectively.
