CLERMONT, Fla. — The Ohio Northern softball team defeated Gettysburg (Pa.) 9-1 and lost to Ithaca (N.Y.) 5-2 Tuesday on the third day of its annual spring break trip.
The Basics
- Records: Ohio Northern (4-2 overall), Gettysburg (5-2 overall), Ithaca (4-3 overall)
- Venue: Legends Way #5 - Clermont, Fla.
Game 1 - W, 9-1 (5 innings)
- The Polar Bears hit four home runs as part of their 9-hit barrage.
- Fifth-year senior Sydney Motylinski (Ida, Mich.), senior Kaylie Griffin (Grafton/Elyria Catholic), junior Ashley Lenser (Brookville) and junior Callie Rosser (Republic/Monroeville) all hit home runs in the contest.
- Rosser finished with four RBI and Lenser scored three times.
- Lenser also threw a complete game 4-hitter, allowing only one earned run while striking out seven, to earn the win in the circle and improve to 2-1 on the season.
- Northern broke open a 1-1 tie with a 3-run third frame, keyed by a solo home run from Lenser and a 2-run shot by Griffin.
- Motylinski's solo home run in the fourth led to a 4-run inning and an 8-1 lead.
Game 2 - L, 2-5
- Lenser belted a solo home run and sophomore Allie Wilson (Wapakoneta) singled home Rosser with ONU's runs in the top of the sixth.
- Lenser and Wilson each had two of Northern's five base hits in the contest.
- Four of the Polar Bears' five hits were doubles, led by two from Wilson.
- The Bombers built a 5-0 lead with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth off junior Kayla Runyon (Tipp City) (2-1).
Notables
- The Polar Bears have played six of the 10 games scheduled on their spring break trip.
- Wilson and Lenser lead Ohio Northern in batting thus far this season with averages of .538 and .524, respectively.
- Northern is now 1-0 all-time against Gettysburg and 0-1 all-time against Ithaca.
- Ohio Northern is in its 57th season of softball. The Polar Bears are 976-662-4 all-time, a winning percentage of .593.
