CLERMONT, Fla. — The Ohio Northertn softball team opened its annual spring break trip with victories over Mitchell (Conn.) and Utica (N.Y.) on Sunday.
ONU defeated MC 10-2 and UC 8-0.
The Basics
- Records: Ohio Northern (2-0 overall), Mitchell (0-3 overall), Utica (0-1 overall)
- Venue: Legends Way #2 - Clermont, Fla.
Game 1 - W, 10-2
- Junior Ashley Lenser (Brookville) allowed only three hits and one run while striking out seven over 6.0 innings to earn the win in the circle for Ohio Northern.
- Lenser and sophomore Kylie King (London/Alder) led the Polar Bear offense with three hits each.
- Senior Kaylie Griffin (Grafton/Elyria Catholic) was 2-for-4 with a triple and 2 RBI.
- Northern blew open a scoreless tie with a 7-run fourth inning and cruised to the win.
- The Polar Bears out-hit the Mariners 11-5.
Game 2 - W, 8-0
- Junior Kayla Runyon (Tipp City) threw a 2-hit shutout with four strikeouts in her first career appearance to lead ONU.
- Fifth-year Sydney Motylinski (Ida, Mich.) went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and 4 RBI to lead the Northern offense.
- Lenser was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.
- Northern scored three times in the bottom of the third and five more times in the bottom of the fourth to lead 8-0.
- The game was called after 4.5 innings due to the NCAA's 8-run rule.
Notables
- The Polar Bears have now won three consecutive season openers.
- Lenser finished the day 4-for-6 with two runs and three RBI at the plate.
