Baseball sweeps double header at Wilmington by identical 12-1 scores

WILMINGTON — The Ohio Northern baseball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference double header at Wilmington on Sunday afternoon.

ONU won the opener 12-1 and took the nightcap 12-1.  

The Basics

• Records: Ohio Northern (14-13 overall, 5-5 OAC), Wilmington (2-23 overall, 0-10 OAC).
• Venue: Tewksbury-Delaney Field - Wilmington Ohio.

Game 1 - W, 12-1 (8 innings)

• Northern broke open a tight 2-1 game with three runs in the fifth and seventh innings and four more in the eighth inning.
• ONU took advantage of seven walks, four errors and three hit batsmen to score 12 runs on nine base hits.
• Senior Logan Stevens (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) was 3-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBI.
• Sophomore Chase Armstrong (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) had an RBI double and two sac flies to finish with 3 RBI and freshman Kyler Lapp (Hall, Ill.) had a 2-run home run and a RBI triple to also finish the game with 3 RBI.
• Junior Blake Altaffer (Montpelier) struck out 5 and allowed only one run on 6.0 innings on the hill to earn the win and improve to 3-2 on the season.
• The game was called after 8 innings due to an agreed-upon 10-run rule.
• WC out-hit ONU 10-9 in the game.

Game 2 - W, 12-1 (7 innings)

• Northern scored twice in the third and three more in the fourth and fifth frames to go up 8-1, then added four more in the seventh to ice the game.
• Freshman Marco Morrison (Whitehouse/Anthony Wayne) went 3-for-4 with three runs and 4 RBI, including a 3-run home run in the fourth, to lead the ONU offense.
• Stevens was 3-for-4 with a run scored in the nightcap.
• Junior Joe Tootle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) allowed one run and five hits in 3.2 innings to earn the win and improve to 2-2 on the season.
• The game was called after 7 innings due to an agreed-upon 10-run rule.
• ONU out-hit WC 16-6 in the nightcap.

Notables

• Stevens finished the day 6-for-9 with 2 runs, three doubles, a home run and 3 RBI.
• Junior Andrew Stechschulte (Findlay) was 4-for-8 with 3 runs and 1 RBI .
• Junior Joey Kennedy (Sterling Heights, Mich./Foley Catholic) leads the team through 27 games with a .415 batting average.
• Junior Sam Sells (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) is second in batting at .380 and Lapp is third at .337.
• Stechschulte leads the team with 33 hits and 28 RBI and is one of four players with 4 home runs.
• Ohio Northern is now 38-26 all-time against Wilmington, including a 14-15 record at Wilmington.
• Ohio Northern is in its 119th season of baseball. The Polar Bears are 1455-1150 all-time, a winning percentage of .558.
