DAVENPORT, Fla. — Freshman Ethan Spears (Oregon/Clay) homered in his first collegiate at bat to lead the Ohio Northern baseball team in its season-opening doubleheader against Marymount (Va.) on Sunday in the RussMatt Invitational tournament.
The Polar Bears (0-2) dropped both games to the Saints (8-0) 13-8 and 3-2.
Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the second inning in Game 1, Spears hit a 2-run home run to score senior Chayton Overholt (Delphos/Lincolnview) and get ONU within 4-3.
Northern tallied three times in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 6-5, but MU scored four runs in the fifth and seventh innings to post the win.
Sophomore Noah Truax (Lewis Center/Bishop Watterson) took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning of Game 2, but the Saints would score three times in the fifth to go up 3-0.
Junior Nate Webb (Bath, Ind./Union County) had a 2-run single in the top of the seventh to get ONU within 3-2, but Marymount would be able to end the rally there and hang on for the sweep.
The Polar Bears will continue their spring break trip on Monday morning with a 10:30 am game against Immaculata (Pa.)
