No. 19 Volleyball sweeps #12 Carnegie Mellon (Pa.), drops 5-set decision to Thomas More (Ky.) on first day of 40th annual ONU Invitational

ADA — The No. 19-ranked Ohio Northern volleyball team opened its 2018 season with a sweep of No. 12-ranked Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) and a 5-game loss to Thomas More (Ky.) on the opening day of the 40th annual ONU Invitational on Friday at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears (1-1 overall) wrapped up the day with an impressive 25-15, 25-14, 25-18 victory over Carnegie Mellon (0-1) on Friday night after falling to TMC (2-0) 23-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-8 on Friday afternoon.
In the victory over the Tartans, junior Chelsea Huppert (Bremen, Ind.) had 13 kills and junior McKenna Jordan (Toledo/St. Ursula) and freshman Madi Ellis (Delphos/Saint John's) each added 10 kills for ONU.
CMU was led by Sarah Jurgens with 13 kills.
Northern dominated from the outset, racing to a 10-4 lead in game one. ONU led 7-2 in game two and 6-2 in game three and led nearly the entire match.
Against TMC, Jordan had 15 kills, Huppert had 13 kills and Ellis had 10 kills for Ohio Northern.
The Saints got 29 kills from Jenna Mummert and 14 kills from Emily Mohs.
Neither team was able to create any separation in the first four games, but TMC opened the fifth and deciding game on an 8-1 run and held on for the win.
Sophomore Katie Wade (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) had 77 assists and Madison Broering (Saint Henry) had 52 digs in the two matches.
On Saturday, ONU will host Defiance at 10:30 am and Case Western Reserve at 12:30 pm.
