MARIETTA — The Ohio Northern women's soccer team capped its regular-season schedule with a 5-0 win over Marietta on Saturday afternoon at Marietta Field, claiming a share of the Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season title with Capital.
The Polar Bears (12-1-4 overall, 7-0-2 OAC) finished unbeaten in Ohio Athletic Conference play for the sixth time in program history and end the regular season on a six-game win streak as part of a larger 11-game unbeaten streak. Each of the team's last six victories were shutouts.
The Pioneers fall to 3-12-1 overall and 2-7-0 in the OAC.
Northern entered play Saturday trailing Capital by two points in the standings, and Comets' 2-2 tie with Baldwin Wallace combined with the Polar Bears' victory meant both teams finished with 23 points.
This marks ONU's ninth OAC Regular Season Championship.
The Polar Bears will be the No. 2 seed in the OAC Tournament and will host a semifinal game on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Polar Bears' five goals in Saturday's game came from five different players, as juniors Alaina Casey (Beavercreek/Carroll) and Kylie Cabana (Dexter, Mich.), sophomore Alexa Clampitt (Sterling Heights, Mich./Utica Academy for International Studies) and freshmen Nora Metcalf (Herndon, Va.) and Alli Macbeth (Fishers, Ind.) all found the back of the net.
Casey got the scoring started in the 28th minute with a goal on an assist from Macbeth, and Metcalf put Northern up 2-0 with an unassisted goal in the 38th minute.
The final three Polar Bear goals came in the second half via Cabana, Clampitt and Macbeth.
Senior Kylie Brown (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern Central) assisted Cabana's goal, and sophomore Emma Bowman (Novi, Mich./Northville) assisted Macbeth's goal.
Bowman entered the day leading the OAC in assists and now has nine on the season.
ONU senior goalkeeper Becky Moss (Lebanon/Mount Notre Dame) recorded her 12th shutout of the season.
Those 12 shutouts are tied for third-best all-time at ONU for a single season, and Moss' 12 career shutouts are ninth-best in program history.
Northern out-shot Marietta 24-1 in the game and finished with a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
