ADA - The No. 8-ranked Ohio Northern women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2018 season Saturday afternoon, defeating Case Western Reserve 1-0 at Kerscher Stadium.
With the victory, the Polar Bears improve to 1-2-0 on the season while the Spartans fall to a similar mark.
Junior midfielder Haley Moses (Mason) would supply the lone goal of the match in the 69th minute, tapping in a shot that rebounded off of Spartan goalkeeper Lauren Metz. Senior forward McKenna Welsh (Westerville/Bishop Hartley) would be credited with an assist, her first of the season, after producing the initial shot on goal.
Northern would benefit from a 15-7 total shots advantage, including a 6-1 cushion in shots on goal Saturday afternoon.
Senior midfielder Sarah Puntel (Strongsville) would register four shots in the contest to lead the Polar Bears in the statistical category. Meanwhile, Welsh provided three total shots, including a team-best two shots on goal.
Defensively, the Ohio Northern backline helped the program record its first shutout of the new campaign.
Junior goalkeeper Meagan Grierson (Miamisburg) was called upon just once during the contest, and she delivered making her lone save of the affair to secure the victory and a clean sheet.
The Polar Bears are scheduled to return to action next weekend as they complete a three-game home stand.
ONU will face off against Trine (Ind.) at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 14 and Alma (Mich.) at 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 15. Both matches are to be played at Kerscher Stadium in Ada.
