ADA -- The Ohio Northern women's soccer team fell 2-1 Saturday evening to No. 2-seeded Mount Union at Kerscher Stadium in the OAC Championship Tournament game.
The Polar Bears fall to 15-4-0 overall, while the Purple Raiders improve to 16-6-3 and clinch the Ohio Athletic Conference automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.
Senior Shelby Stephens (Cypress, Tex./Cypress Woods) led the way for Northern, as she scored the lone Polar Bear goal.
Stephens put Northern ahead 1-0 early on in the contest as she beat two defenders and found the back of the net from the left wing in the 12th minute.
The Purple Raiders were able to answer at the end of the half, as they scored in the 43rd minute to knot the game at 1-1 at the intermission.
After a defensive battle in the second half, the two teams would need extra time to decide the winner.
After a header from freshman Alyssa Manley (Lima/Bath) was saved, MtU would score in the 95th minute to seal the contest.
The Polar Bears outshot the Purple Raiders 18-13, and won the corner kick battle by a 5-2 margin.
ONU will await the live selection show on Monday to see if they receive an at large bid to the NCAA III Tournament. | Link |
