ADA -- The Ohio Northern women's soccer team scored two goals within the first five minutes of the game as they defeated Heidelberg 4-0 Wednesday evening at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 9-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Student Princes fall to 5-7-2, 0-4-0.
The Polar Bears scored early and often as senior Shelby Stephens (Cypress, Tex./Cypress Woods) received a long ball from freshman Hannah Martin in the third minute (Mason/Mount Notre Dame) and beat the keeper to far post from the left wing.
Just over a minute later senior Missy Ward (Columbus/Westerville North) was able to gather a deflected pass and found the back of the net to push the lead to 2-0.
In the 80th minute Stephens would take a shot and a failed clear attempt by the HU defense led to an own goal to give Northern a 3-0 lead.
The Polar Bears were able to seal the 4-0 victory in the 76th minute as junior Mary Kate Munz (Gahanna/Gahanna Lincoln) played a corner kick into the goalies box and junior Abbey Oswald (Lambertville, MI/Bedford) found the back of the net with a header.
Freshman Meagan Grierson earned the victory in the goal for the Polar Bears and improved to 9-3-0 on the year.
Grierson recorded two saves for ONU.
Ohio Northern outshot the Student Princes by an 18-3 margin, and won the corner kick battle by a 8-0 mark.
The Polar Bears will return to action Saturday afternoon as they travel to John Carroll at 4 pm to take on the Blue Streaks in an OAC matchup.
