ALLIANCE -- Sophomore Sarah Puntel (Strongsville) scored two second half goals to lead the No. 18-ranked Ohio Northern women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Mount Union in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Mount Union Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 7-2 overall and are 1-0 in OAC play, while the Purple Raiders fall to 4-6, 0-1.
After a scoreless first half, Puntel got Northern on the board with a goal just 7:21 into the second half off an assist from freshman Hannah Martin (Mason/Mount Notre Dame).
Puntel scored an insurance goal with 16:03 left in the game to extend the lead to 2-0.
Her second goal proved to be critical as Mount Union scored on a penalty kick with 5:29 left in the match to make it 2-1.
But the ONU defense held MtU without a shot the rest of the match to hang on for the win.
Ohio Northern out-shot Mount Union 14-9, including a 10-4 advantage in the second half.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Tuesday with a 4 pm match at Otterbein.
