ADA — The Ohio Northern women's soccer team dropped its first Ohio Athletic Conference match of the season, as they fell to Capital 2-1 in a double overtime thriller at Kerscher Stadium.
Prior to the contest Ohio Northern dedicated the newly renevated track and field and soccer complex as "Kerscher Stadium."
Northern falls to 8-6-1 overall, 4-1-0 OAC, while Capital improves to 9-4-0, 5-0-0.
Junior Shelby Stephens led the way for ONU as she scored a goal in the 79th minute to tie the contest at 1-1.
The Polar Bears edged the Crusaders in shots by a 15-14 margin, six of which were on goal.
Capital struck first in the contest, finding the back of the net in the 67th minute to put the Crusaders on top 1-0.
ONU responded in the 79th minute with a goal of its own as Stephens beat two defenders inside the 18 to tie the game.
In the first overtime sophomore Mary Kate Munz looked to break the tie as the Polar Bear delivered a header on goal that was saved by the Capital keeper.
Capital was finally able to break the tie in the 101st minute as an ONU miscue set up a penalty kick to seal the 2-1 Crusaders victory.
Senior goalkeeper Emily Brodict recorded a game-high six saves in the contest.
Northern returns to action Wednesday as they welcome Heidelberg to Kerscher Stadium at 7 pm.
