UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — The Ohio Northern women's soccer team defeated John Carroll Saturday evening 3-0 in its Ohio Athletic Conference season opener at Don Shula Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 5-5-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the OAC, while John Carroll falls to 2-8-1, 0-1-0.
Junior Rachel Weigman led the way for Ohio Northern as she scored two goals on six shots, five of which were on goal.
The Polar Bears struck early in the contest as Weigman found the back of the net in the 3rd minute to put ONU on top 1-0.
The Northern attack would strike again in the 23rd minute as freshman McKenna Welsh was able to capitalize on a pass from junior Shelby Stephens to push the ONU lead to 2-0.
Weigman would seal the game for the Polar Bears as she took a pass from junior Missy Ward and pushed the Northern lead to 3-0 in the 66th minute.
ONU recorded 14 shots in the first half, and finished with 17 on the evening.
Senior goal keeper Emily Brodict earned the victory for the Polar Bears as she recorded five saves in the contest.
Northern returns to action Wednesday as they host Wilmington at 7 pm at Kerscher Stadium.
