UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- The Ohio Northern women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 double overtime contest to John Carroll on a cold and wet Thursday evening in the OAC Tournament Semifinals.
The Polar Bears see their season end at 10-9-2, while the Blue Streaks improve to 11-6-3.
JCU advances to the OAC Tournament final against top seed Capital on Sunday.
"I am really proud of this team and senior class," said head coach Mark Batman. "Our seniors have shown great leadership all season. This team has faced a lot of adversity and the seniors led us through it."
John Carroll had a chance in the first minute when they gained possession.
A ball was sent into the box and Nicki Bohrer headed a shot towards the goal.
But sophomore goalie Emily Brodict made a diving stop to deny the attempt.
Neither team would have another opportunity and there would be no score heading into halftime.
ONU came out of the break and took the lead in the 62nd minute.
The Polar Bears sent a ball in the box that bounced around towards the goal.
Senior Sami Atkinson was able to get a foot on the ball and slide it past the goalie, for her fifth goal of the season.
The Blue Streaks would answer a few minutes later.
A ball was sent into the box and knocked around, with a hand ball being called on ONU.
Kaylin Akerly stepped up and fired a penalty kick, that Brodict got a hand on, but still found the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1.
The teams would continue to battle through a scoreless first overtime.
In the second overtime, senior Abbie Schauble found a loose ball off of a corner kick, but it was blocked.
The ball deflected back to her and she fired another shot that was saved.
The Blue Streaks struck just moments later, when Genney Goergen fired a rocket into the left side of the net.
Brodict (9-8-2) made six saves in goal for ONU.
Haley McDonald (8-5-1) made three saves at goalkeeper for John Carroll.
Both teams fired 11 shots in the match and Northern owned a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
"The senior class has changed this program," Batman added. "They have won us conference championships and represented us in the NCAA Tournament. They have left their staple on the program and leave it in great hands."
