ADA -- The Ohio Northern women's soccer team began its 2013 season with a 4-1 win over Kalamazoo (Mich.) on Friday afternoon at the ONU Soccer Field.
ONU is now 1-0-0 on the season with the win and Kalamazoo falls to 0-1-0.
Junior Kristina Klusek got things started early with a goal in the 20th minute of play, when she fired a shot that was buried in the left side of the net from the right side.
Just three minutes later, freshman Alaura Mikesell added another goal to make it 2-0 with the assist going to Klusek.
Sydney Spring got the Hornets on the board by rocketing a shot that was just out of the reach of ONU senior goalkeeper Kimmy Connor.
The scoring continued for ONU in the second half.
Senior Sami Atkinson knocked in a header off of a free kick by sophomore Kelsey Robinson to make it 3-1 in favor of the Polar Bears.
Senior Lauren Brown added another goal after receiving a cross from freshman Shelby Stephens.
The Hornets were never able to battle back and Ohio Northern walked away with a 4-1 win.
Connor played the first half and picked up the win to move to 1-0-0 on the year. Sophomore Emily Brodict played the second half in goal for ONU and made four saves in her time.
Lucy Mailing (0-1-0) made three saves for the Hornets.
"Today was a good win for us," head coach Mark Batman said. "It was a good start for us with some room for improvement. In all, it was solid across the board for such a young group."
Ohio Northern will return to action on Saturday when it welcomes Hanover (Ind.) to the ONU Soccer Field at 2 pm.
