ADA--The Ohio Northern women's soccer team got back to their winning ways, defeating Marietta by a 5-0 score Saturday afternoon at the ONU Soccer Field.
The Polar Bears are now 7-4-3 on the season and 2-3-0 in OAC play, while the Pioneers fall to 3-9-1, 1-3-1.
The Polar Bears started the game fast and aggressive which led to the first score coming in the 8th minute.
Junior Sandy Plunkett headed in a ball off of a corner kick from junior Lauren Brown.
Plunkett added her second goal in the 17th minute of the game, with sophomore Sandra Thorarensen and junior Abbie Schauble picking up the assists.
Northern didn't slow down in the second half adding their third goal in the 46th minute as senior Paige Garber took a free kick that was saved by the keeper but senior Tara Tokar knocked the rebound into the net.
The goal was the first of the season for Tokar and the first assist for Garber.
In the 67th minute the lead grew to four when freshman Alex Weirich knocked in a rebound off the keeper from a shot by junior Sami Atkinson.
Just five minutes later the Polar Bears went up 5-0 as a corner went to freshman Alex Hazelet who passed to Atkinson who beat the goalie.
Senior goalie Erin Waehner (7-4-3) didn't make a save and picked up her sixth shutout of the season.
Marietta goalie Kaitlyn Pearse (3-9-1) recorded eight saves on the day.
The Pioneers put up one shot in the game while Northern took 29, 10 in the first half and 19 in the second half.
The Polar Bears earned the advantage on corners as well with 8-1.
ONU will play again on Wednesday at 7 pm when they travel to Tiffin for an OAC match up against Heidelberg.
