ADA — Sophomore Sami Atkinson scored in the 67th minute and senior Alyssa Merrick knocked in a penalty kick to lead the No. 11 Ohio Northern women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Wilmington, Tuesday evening at the ONU Soccer Field.
With the win the Polar Bears are now 12-1-2 and 6-0-0 in the OAC while the Quakers fall to 5-8-3 over and 3-3-0 in conference.
Atkinson's ninth goal of the season was from a pass from Tara Tokar, as Atkinson dribbled down the right side of the field contested and shot the ball over the keeper's head into the left corner of the net.
Merrick then scored on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute, notching her fourth goal of the year.
"I was very happy with the way our players fought today," head coach Mark Batman said. "Wilmington is a tough team that makes you play for 90 minutes. We were very patient with our chances and made the most of our opportunities."
Northern outshot the Quakers by a 21-7 margin and took nine shots on-goal.
Junior goalie Erin Waehner recorded her fifth-straight shutout and eighth on the season by making four saves.
Ohio Northern will be in action again on Friday when they travel to John Carroll for a 7 p.m. match.
