Sumner, Reed, Mellott win weight class titles, leads No. 20 Wrestling to 41st Annual ONU Invitational title

ADA — The No. 20-ranked Ohio Northern wrestling team won three weight class titles and finished first of 13 teams at the 41st Annual ONU Invitational on Saturday at the ONU Sports Center Fieldhouse.
The Polar Bears (10-0 overall) scored 198.5 points to win the team crown. No. 22 Lycoming (Pa.) was second with 173.5 points, No. 11 Olivet (Mich.) was third with 155.5 points and Adrian (Mich.) was fourth with 91 points.
No. 10-ranked senior Chase Sumner (Ada), No. 2-ranked sophomore Jacob Reed (Lancaster) and sophomore Colin Mellott (Wapakoneta) all won their individual weight class titles to lead ONU.
Sumner and Reed were the top seeds and finished with 5-0 records at 149 and 141 pounds, respectively.
Mellott won the 125-pound weight class with a 4-0 record as the No. 2 seed.
Top-seeded sophomore Gavin Layman (Chesterton, Ind.) placed second at 184, top-seeded sophomore Teagan Hendricks (Jamestown/Greenview) was second at 157 and second-seeded sophomore Dylan Le (Powell/Dublin Scioto) was second at 133.
No. 14-ranked and top-seeded senior Jordan Hardrick (Dayton/Wayne) finished third at 165.
Junior Ross Rayfield (Delta) placed third as an unseeded wrestler at 149.
Senior Camden Spears (Plainfield, Ind.) placed fourth at 133.
At the 197 pound weight class, senior Ben DePrest (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier) placed fourth and freshman Ajay Locke (Lancaster) placed fifth.
Northern had a pair of wrestlers place in the heavyweight division. Junior Jadon Brownlee (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) placed fifth and freshman Tarez Russell (Lima/Elida) placed eighth.
Sophomore Adam Myers (Springfield/Shawnee) placed seventh at 174.
In all, ONU had 14 wrestlers place in the 10 weight classes.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Dec. 22 at the Wilkes (Pa.) Open.
