Wrestling opens 2021 season with victories over Heidelberg and Wilmington

ADA — The Ohio Northern wrestling team opened its 2021 season with home dual meet victories over Heidelberg and Wilmington on Sunday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center Fieldhouse.
The Polar Bears (2-0 overall, 2-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) defeated Heidelberg 33-15 and topped Wilmington 46-0.
Sophomore Ben DePrest (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier) and freshman Ross Rayfield (Delta)led Ohio Northern with 2-0 records on the day.
Against Heidelberg, ONU jumped to a 23-0 lead and went on to a 29-15
The Polar Bears got a forfeit victory by freshman Devon Harbison (Beloit, Wis./Turner) at 125 pounds.
Rayfield then won by pin at 141 points to pout the Polar Bears on top 18-0.
Sophomore Chase Sumner (Ada) won 16-0 by tech fall at 149 pounds to make it 23-0.
After four consecutive Heidelberg wins made it 23-15, No. 6-ranked senior Cash Thompson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood) iced the match for the Polar Bears with a first period pin in 2:38 at 197 pounds.
Against Wilmington, Harbison, junior Dylan Knotts (Russells Point/Indian Lake) and junior Connor Dixon (Huntsville/Indian Lake) all picked up pins for the Polar Bears.
Rayfield and No. 10-ranked senior Schuyler Caprella (Harrod/Allen East) won by tech falls at 141 and 157, respectively.
The Polar Bears will take to the road next weekend at Baldwin Wallace with dual meets against BW and John Carroll.
