ADA — Sophomores Betsy Naugle (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) and Rachel Shipman (Noblesville, Ind.) led the Ohio Northern women's lacrosse team to its second consecutive victory and a home-opening 15-8 victory over Trine (Ind.) on Saturday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 2-0 overall, while the Thunder fall to 0-1.
Northern was led in the contest by Shipman as she recorded four goals, while Naugle posted three scores.
Sophomores Maggie Fuller (Naples, Fla.) and Hailey Green (South Lyon, Mich.) each added two goals for ONU.
Naugle got Northern off to a fast start, scoring just under a 90 seconds into the contest to give ONU a 1-0 lead.
After a goal from freshman Sydney Skelding (Dublin, Calif.) was answered by three straight goals from Trine, Fuller scored off an assist from freshman Sabra Woodruff (Beavercreek) to knot the contest at 3-3 with 15:20 remaining in the first half.
After the Thunder found the back of the net with 14:20 left in the half, Skelding found Naugle for her second goal of the game with 13:06 remaining in the half to bring the score to an even 4-4.
From there, sophomores Ann McArn (Bay Village/Western Reserve Academy) and Jacqui Lohman (Liberty Township/Lakota East) each tallied unassisted goals to end the half and give Northern a 6-4 lead at the intermission.
The Polar Bears took command of the contest in the opening fifteen and a half minutes of the second half as Naugle scored twice, McArn, Lohman, Fuller and Woodruff each scored and Shipman tallied back-to-back goals to push the Polar Bear lead to 11-4 with 14:32 left in the contest.
Trine was able to get one back before Shipman again scored on back-to-back occasions and pushed the lead to 13-5.
After the Thunder added another goal, Green added to the Northern lead and scored with just over five minutes left in the contest to push the lead to 14-6.
Green would ensure that Trine's answer to her goal answered as she tallied her second goal in less than three minutes to keep ONU on top, 15-7.
TU would add one more goal, but could not get any closer as ONU went on to win 15-8.
Senior Shannen Larsen Van Alstine (Neenah, Wis.) earned the victory in the goal and improved to 2-0 this season, recording four saves in the game.
Northern returns to action on Thursday, Mar. 1 at 7 pm as it travels to Wooster to take on the Scots at 7 pm.
