ADA — Senior Emily Brock (Akron/Revere) scored 14 points as the Ohio Northern Women's basketball team defeated Heidelberg 73-34 in the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Friday night at the ONU Sports Center.
With the win, seventh-seeded ONU (6-7 overall) advances to the OAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday night to face second-seeded Otterbein at 7 pm at the Rike Center in Westerville.
HU finishes its season 1-12.
Junior Alissa Stahler (Lima/Shawnee) and sophomore Brynn Serbin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) added eight points each off the bench for Ohio Northern.
"I was very proud of the way we played defensively," ONU head coach Mark Huelsman said. "We made it very difficult for Heidelberg to score. We forced turnovers and turned them into points on the other end. We are playing well right now and are excited to continue in the OAC Tournament."
The Polar Bears led 11-8 with 1:33 remaining in the first quarter and used a 13-0 run to pull away at 24-8 with 5:45 remaining in the half.
Northern led 36-14 at halftime and cruised to the win.
Karlee Mills led Heidelberg in scoring with 10 points.
ONU made 29-of-61 field goals for 47.5 percent and was 11-of-24 from 3-point range for 45.8 percent, while HU made 14-of-57 field goals for 24.6 percent and made 2-of-14 from beyond the arc for 14.3 percent.
The Student Princes outrebounded the Polar Bears 41-35.
