By Tim Glon — Sophomore Ashley Lenser (Brookville) and senior Allie Bican (Solon) each tossed shutouts to lead the Ohio Northern softball team to a 9-0, 1-0 doubleheader sweep at Wilmington on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon at the WC Softball Complex.
The Polar Bears improve to 15-11 overall and 5-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while the Quakers fall to 10-14, 0-8.
Lenser earned the win in Game 1, improving to 8-5 on the season after throwing a 6-hit shutout with five strikeouts. It marks her second shutout of the season and the eighth of her career.
Northern scored all the runs it would need in the top of the third when senior Lauren Walls (Grove City) doubled home senior Annika Murray (Hilliard/Bradley) to make it 1-0.
Senior Abby Elliott (Loveland/Ursuline)followed with a single to score Walls and the lead was 2-0.
ONU sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth, scoring seven times, to break the game wide open.
The contest was called after six innings due to the NCAA's 8-run rule.
In the nightcap, Bican scattered seven hits and struck out nine to earn her first shutout of the season and the fifth of her career. She improves to 7-6 on the season.
The Polar Bears plated the game's only run in the top of the fourth when Murray tripled and scored on a two-out error.
Ohio Northern will return to action on Saturday with an OAC doubleheader at John Carroll.
