ADA — Junior Kaylie Griffin (Grafton/Elyria Catholic) and sophomore Ashley Lenser (Brookville) helped lead the Ohio Northern softball team to a doubleheader split with Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday at the ONU Softball Field.
The Polar Bears (10-10 overall, 1-3 OAC) got a 3-1 victory in Game 1 before falling 8-2 to the Yellow Jackets (11-9 overall, 3-1 OAC) in Game 2.
Griffin had two of Northern's six hits in the opener, tallying a double and home run to go with two RBIs.
Lenser pitched all seven innings, giving up just one unearned run on four hits and three walks to go with one strikeout.
The Polar Bears got on the scoreboard early, as Griffin hit a two-out RBI double that plated senior Lauren Walls (Grove City) in the bottom of the first inning.
A two-out triple from senior Annika Murray (Hilliard/Bradley) brought senior Sydney Motylinski (Ida, Mich.) home for a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
BWU's Bridie Bricker drew a bases-loaded walk to get the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth frame, but Griffin answered with a solo homer to center field to stretch the ONU lead to 3-1 in the fifth.
Lenser retired the BWU batters quickly over the final two innings, getting a 1-2-3 sixth and facing just four batters in the seventh after the leadoff hitter reached base on an error.
Lenser is now 6-4 on the season.
Yellow Jacket pitchers Hannah Welling and Marisa Hall quieted the ONU offense in Game 2, combining to allow just one hit.
The BWU offense, meanwhile, tallied nine hits and scored eight runs courtesy of outbursts in the third and fifth frames.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring with a four-run third inning, getting a 2-RBI double from Lexy Coggins and RBI doubles from Bricker and Sara Frederickson.
BWU added four more runs in the fifth, increasing its lead to 8-0.
Northern got on the scoreboard via an RBI single from Walls that plated sophomore Callie Rosser (Republic/Monroeville) in the bottom of the fifth.
The Polar Bears capped the scoring on a sacrifice fly from Murray that brought freshman Allie Wilson (Wapakoneta) home in the sixth.
Northern returns to action on Friday hosting an OAC doubleheader against Muskingum beginning at 1 p.m.
