ADA — The Ohio Northern softball team pounded out 24 base hits en route to a 7-5, 9-1 sweep of Alma (Mich.) on a chilly, wet and windy Wednesday afternoon at the ONU Softball Field.
The Polar Bears (8-6 overall) also got home runs from senior Abby Elliott (Loveland/Ursuline), senior Allie Bican (Solon) and sophomore Callie Rosser (Republic/Monroeville) in the victory.
The Scots fall to 9-8 on the season.
In the opener, Elliott started a 3-run second inning with an infield single to score junior Kaylie Griffin (Grafton/Elyria Catholic) with the first run of the game.
Elliott later scored on a wild pitch and Rosser singled home junior Sydney Motylinski (Ida, Mich.) to make it 3-0.
Northern increased the lead to 4-0 in the third when freshman Allie Wilson (Wapakoneta) doubled home Griffin.
Alma tied it with a grand slam in the top of the fourth, but Elliott answered with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to give ONU a 6-4 lead.
Alma drew within 6-5 in the top of the sixth with a solo home run.
Rosser gave ONU another 2-run cushion with an unearned run in the sixth when she scored on a dropped pop fly.

Bican then drew a two-out walk to score Walls and Motylinski singled home Wilson to give ONU a 9-1 lead and end the game due to the NCAA's 8-run rule.
