JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fla. — The Ohio Northern softball team split a pair of 6-2 decisions on the fourth day of the team's annual spring break trip on on Thursday at the Auburndale Softball Complex.
The Polar Bears (4-4 overall) began the morning with a 6-2 loss to Saint Mary's (Ind.) in the morning, then topped Lakeland (Wis.) 6-2 in the afternoon.
In the night cap against the Muskies (5-4) sophomore Ashley Lenser (Brookville) pitched a complete-game three-hitter to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Lenser also started the scoring with a RBI double in the top of the first, scoring sophomore Mariana Alejandro (Gibsonburg) with the game's first run.
Sophomore Callie Rosser (Republic/Monroeville) had a run-scoring single, followed by a sac fly from Alejandro as ONU put two more runs on the board in the second.
Junior Kaylie Griffin (Grafton/Elyria Catholic) led off the top of the third with a home run and freshman Allie Wilson (Wapakoneta) and sophomore Taylor Hilty (Kettering/Fairmont) would also have RBIs in the frame to push the lead to 6-0.
In the opener against the Belles (3-4), SMC would score in each of the first three innings to build a 5-0 lead.
Freshman Hailey Fraser (Erie, Colo.) would drive home a run in the bottom of the third and Rosser would double home another run in the fourth as ONU crept back to within 5-2.
But St. Mary's would score an unearned run in the top of the sixth and hang on for the victory.
The Polar Bears wiull wrap up its spring break trip on Friday morning with a 9 am game against Rutgers-Camden and a 11:30 am game with Lake Forest (Ill.)
