ADA — The Ohio Northern softball team completed a 4-game sweep of Otterbein with 3-1 and 4-3 victories on Saturday at the Otterbein Softball Field.
The Polar Bears end their regular season with a 20-17-1 overall record and finish 19-16 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
ONU will be either the No. 3 or the No. 4 seed in next week's OAC Tournament and will host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday at 4 pm at the ONU Softball Field.
The Cardinals end their season 14-25, 11-24.
In game one, junior Lauren Renner (Columbus/Hilliard Bradley) went 3-for-4 with a first-inning RBI single to lead ONU's 12-hit attack.
The lead was still 1-0 when senior Brady Guest (Convoy/Crestview) hit a 2-run single to make it 3-0 in the top of the sixth.
Those runs became important with OU hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, but junior Stacey Walters (Sunbury/Big Walnut) would retire six of the last seven batters she faced to notch the complete-game victory and improve to 12-5 in the circle.
In the nightcap, sophomore Sydney Motylinski (Ida, Mich.) blasted a 3-run home run, her team-best ninth of the season, to stake Northern to an early 3-0 lead.
That advantage stood up until the Cardinals scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 3-3 and send it into extra innings.
Sophomore Annika Murray (Hilliard/Bradley) had a two-out single, followed by an RBI double by senior Abby Davis (New Palestine, Ind.) to give ONU a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth.
Sophomore Allie Bican (Solon) gave up a leadoff single in the bottom of the eighth, but retired the next three Otterbein batters to end the game.
Bican struck out 10 in the complete game victory to improve to 4-7 on the year.
The tournament brackets and seeding will be announced by the league office on Sunday night. Check back to ONUSports.com for more details when they are available.
