NEW CONCORD — Junior Stacey Walters (Sunbury/Big Walnut) threw a 4-hit shutout to lead the Ohio Northern softball team to a double header split at Muskingum on Sunday at Newberry Field.
The Polar Bears (16-17-1 overall, 15-16 Ohio Athletic Conference) won the opener 1-0 behind Walters' gem, while the Muskies (25-11, 24-8) took the nightcap 3-2.
Walters (10-5) struck out five and walked only one in her third shutout of the season.
Senior Abby Davis (New Palestine, Ind.) scored an unearned run on an error in the top of the first inning to give ONU a quick 1-0 lead.
MU loaded the bases with singles by the first three batters to face Walters in the top of the first.
But Walters would retire the next 17 batters she faced, getting a line-out double play and a strike out to end the threat with the score still 1-0.
She would retire the Muskies in order in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
MU got a leadoff double and a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh, but Walters would again get out of the jam with a pop out and a fly out to end the game.
In the nightcap, junior Lauren Renner (Columbus/Hilliard Bradley) blasted a solo home run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1.
Muskingum would answer with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 3-1.
Senior Alicia Swierz (Deerfield/Southeast) singled home junior Abby Elliott (Loveland/Ursuline) in the top of the sixth to get ONU within 3-2.
Senior Gabby Stewart led off the seventh with a walk and junior Hannah Rubel (Swanton/Notre Dame) sacrificed freshman pinch-runner Kaylie Griffin (Grafton/Elyria Catholic) into scoring position with one out
But the Muskies got a fly out and a ground out to end the game and hang on for the split.
Junior Allie Bican (Solon) struck out five and allowed only six hits in the circle for Ohio Northern.
The Polar Bears will wrap up their regular season with a 4-game series against Otterbein. ONU and OU will play a double header at the ONU Softball Field on Thursday and a pair of games at OU on Sunday.
