ADA — Junior Hannah Rubel (Swanton/Notre Dame) hit a walk-off, run scoring single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Ohio Northern softball team a 5-4 victory over Baldwin Wallace in game two of a double header on Sunday afternoon at the ONU Softball Field.
The Polar Bears move to 15-14-1 overall and are 14-13 in the Ohio Athletic Conference after winning the nightcap in dramatic fashion.
The Yellow Jackets (19-11, 17-11) won the opener 6-1.
Junior Rachel Hish (Alexandria, Va./Patriot) led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Abby Davis (New Palestine, Ind.)
After a strikeout, BW intentionally walked junior Lauren Renner (Columbus/Hilliard Bradley) to put runners on first and second with two out, setting up a potential force play at first, second or third base.
But Rubel came through with a shot into the gap in right center field that went all the way to the wall, easily scoring Hish with the winning run.
Junior Stacey Walters (Sunbury/Big Walnut) threw 145 pitches to pick up the complete-game victory in the circle and improves to 9-4 on the season.
Northern tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore Sydney Motylinski (Ida, Mich.) and Hish scored on wild pitches as ONU closed a 4-2 deficit and sent the game into extra innings.
Senior Alicia Swierz (Deerfield/Southeast) went 3-for-6 on the day to lead the ONU offense.
In the opener, sophomore Annika Murray (Hilliard/Bradley) went 3-for-4 at the plate for ONU.
The Yellow Jackets got a pair of 2-run home runs from Bridie Bricker to build a 4-0 lead and went on to the win.
The Polar Bears will continue their 2021 season next weekend with a 4-game series against Muskingum.
