ALLIANCE — Senior Kaitlin Surdej (Lancaster, N.Y./Central) wrapped up her magical week with two more dominating pitching performances, leading the Ohio Northern softball team to a 6-2, 7-2 sweep of Mount Union on Saturday afternoon at the 23rd Street Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 13-9 overall and stay on top of the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 7-1 league mark, while the Purple Raiders fall to 13-13, 1-7.
This week, Surdej (9-4) pitched in all six of Ohio Northern's games, posting a 5-0 record, one save and did not allow a run in her first 23.2 innings of work.
Junior Alicia Swierz (Deerfield/Southeast) went 5-for-7 with 2 RBI and freshman Rachel Hish (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) was 5-for-7 with four runs scored to lead the ONU offense on Saturday.
In the opener, Northern scored once in the second and two more times in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
Swierz singled home freshman pinch-runner Amanda Hish (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) to make it 4-1 and freshman Abby Elliott (Loveland/Ursuline) singled home senior Hailee Loughman (Brookville) to make it 5-1 in the fifth.
ONU added another run in the sixth to go up 6-1.
The Polar Bears started hot in Game 2 as well, scoring three times in the first and another run in the second to go up 4-1.
MtU got within 4-2 with a run in the third, but Ohio Northern put the game away with three more runs in the top of the sixth frame.
Surdej threw four shutout innings in relief to earn the win.
Northern finished the day with 28 base hits in the two games.
Surdej started the week with 10 shutout innings, a win and a save in a sweep of Wilmington on Tuesday.
She extended her scoreless streak to 20 innings with 10 more shutout innings in a sweep at Capital and allowed only two earned runs in 11 innings on Saturday at Mount Union.
Surdej finished the week with 14 strikeouts and a 0.45 ERA in 31.0 innings in the circle.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Wednesday with a double header against Baldwin Wallace at 3 pm at the ONU Softball Field in a battle of league leaders.
