KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Senior Jenna Hollar (Lima/Bath) became Ohio Northern's all-time career steals leader on Saturday afternoon as the Ohio Northern softball team posted victories over Rowan (N.J.) (4-2) and McDaniel (Md.) (3-2) to wrap up its spring break trip in Kissimme, Fla. at the Sunkissed Games.
The Polar Bears improve to 9-2 after a successful spring break, while the Profs fall to 6-2 and the Green Terror drop to 1-5.
Hollar became ONU's all-time career steals leader in the second game of the afternoon, recording her 99th and 100th career steals. Hollar is now the only Polar Bear in school history to top 100 steals in her career.
In the first game against Rowan, sophomore Gabby Stewart (Union, Ky./St. Henry) plated senior Miranda Huddle (Versailles) with a single to center field to push give Northern an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Senior pitcher Kirsten Lightel (Tallmadge) would hit a 2-RBI double up the middle and scored Huddle and fellow senior Jenna Hollar (Lima/Bath) to push the lead to 3-0 through three innings.
A solo home run from sophomore Brady Guest (Convoy/Crestview) in the top of the fourth inning added some insurance for Northern as the Polar Bears took a 4-0 lead.
The Profs would add two run late in the contest but the Polar Bear defense held strong for the 4-2 victory.
Lightel earned the victory in the pitchers circle, pitching a complete game and striking out three batters.
In the second game of the day, Northern took a 3-0 lead through five innings as sophomore Jordan Cloonan (Kirtland/Cornerstone Christian) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third and Stewart and sophomore Lexie Hess (Mount Vernon) scored on a McDaniel defensive miscue.
The Green Terror threatened down the stretch, scoring twice in the top of the sixth inning, but ONU would hang on for the 3-2 victory.
Junior Kaitlin Surdej (Lancaster/Central) pitched a complete game in the victory, fanning seven batters in the win to improve to 5-1 on the year.
The Polar Bears return home and open their home schedule on Wednesday, Mar. 14 as they welcome Trine (Ind.) to the ONU Softball Field for a twinbill with the first game beginning at 2:30 p.m.
