ADA -- The Ohio Northern softball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference double header from Wilmington 7-3 and 10-5 on Tuesday afternoon at the ONU Softball Field.
The Polar Bears move to 20-8 overall and are 6-4 in OAC play, while the Quakers fall to 5-21, 1-7.
Freshman Hailee Loughman (Brookville) went 4-for-6 with a home run and 5 RBI on the day to lead the Ohio Northern offense.
In Game 1, ONU snapped a 1-1 tie with a 5-run fifth inning to take control of the game.
Freshman Gabby Stewart (Union, Ky./St. Henry) started the rally with an RBI double and Loughman followed with a 2-run single to make it 4-1.
Sophomore Kylie Dickman (Snadusky/Margaretta) had a pinch hit RBI single to make it 5-1 and freshman Sam Arnold (Urichsville/Claymont) capped the rally with an RBI ground out.
Junior Jenna Hollar (Lima/Bath) and freshman Brady Guest (Convoy/Crestview) each had two hits in the opener.
Junior Kirsten Lightel (Tallmadge) picked up the win in the circle to improve to 12-3 on the year.
In Game 2, ONU again posted a 5-run inning to break a tie.
This time it was in the top of the first inning and gave the hosts a quick 5-0 lead.
After WC pulled within 5-2, ONU got a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-2.
Junior Leanna Henry (West Jefferson) and Loughman each had RBI singles in the frame.
The big blow in the rally was a 2-out, 3-run triple by freshman Jordan Cloonan (Kirtland/Cornerstone Christian). She cleared the bases with a shot to the right center field fence and scored on a throwing error to make it 5-0.
WC pulled with 7-5 on a pair of fifth inning home runs, but ONU got an RBI single from freshman Athena Triglia (Winchester, Calif./Chaparral) in the sixth to make it 8-5.
ONU played add-on in the sixth with a solo home run from Loughman and a RBI ground out by Dickman to go up 10-5.
Sophomore Kaitlin Surdej (Lancaster/Central) improved to 8-5 on the season with a complete game in the circle.
Loughman and Cloonan each had three hits in the nightcap for Ohio Northern.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Friday with an OAC double header at Muskingum.
