ADA -- The Ohio Northern softball team rallied to win game one 6-5, before falling 5-0 in the second contest of a twinbill with John Carroll on Sunday afternoon at the ONU Softball Field.
The Polar Bears move to 17-5 overall and 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Blue Streaks move to 8-8, 1-3.
Northern was led at the plate by junior Anna Martin (Huntsburg/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) as she went a combined 5-for-9 in the two contests and added two runs.
The Blue Streaks were able to get on the board first as they scored one in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead.
Northern would answer in the bottom half of the inning as Martin scored from second base on an error from the short stop to knot things at 1-1 after the first inning.
A 2-run home run for the Blue Streaks in the top of the fourth would give JCU a 3-1 lead.
Freshman Gabby Stewart (Union, Ky./St. Henry) nearly hit a home run in the bottom of the fourth to answer for ONU, and drove freshman Alicia Swierz (Deerfield/Southeast) home to close the gap to 3-2.
After sophomore Kaitlin Surdej (Lancaster/Central) pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fifth, ONU would load the bases in the bottom of the fifth and sophomore Hailee Loughman (Brookville) would hit a 2-RBI single to right center to give ONU its first lead of the game.
Junior Jenna Hollar (Lima/Bath) would score in the same inning after an error from the first baseman to extend the lead to 5-3.
JCU answered in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two run home run to tie the contest at 5-5.
After going scoreless in the next inning and a half, Northern would capitalize on a bases loaded jam as freshman Jordan Cloonan (Kirtland/Cornerstone Christian) was hit by a pitch and sophomore Laura Houtz Burden (Pleasant Hill/Newton) scored to seal the 6-5 victory.
Junior Kirsten Lightel (Tallmadge) earned the victory in the circle for Northern to improve her record to 10-1.
JCU scored early in the second contest to take a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
The Blue Streaks would add four more runs in the contest to go on to win game two 5-0.
The Polar Bears return to action Wedneday, Apr. 5 as they travel to Westerville to take on the Cardinals of Otterbein in a twinbill at 3 pm.
