CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Ohio Northern softball team opened its 2014 season with a pair of losses to St. Benedict (Minn.) and Muhlenberg (Pa.) at the Dot Richardson Games on Saturday.
The Polar Bears (0-2) fell to St. Benedict 12-5 and then dropped a 9-8 decision to Muhlenberg.
Against Muhlenberg, sophomore Lindsay Simmons went 2-3 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI to lead ONU.
Trailing 9-4 in the top of the seventh, Simmons drilled a 2-run triple to start a 4-run rally and pull Northern within 9-8.
But the rally would end with runners on first and second and the Mules would hang on for the win.
Freshman Kirsten Burden (0-1) took the pitching loss for ONU.
In the season opener against St. Benedict, the Polar Bears scored five runs in the top of the fifth frame to chip into an 8-0 deficit.
Freshman Paige Ordean (0-1) took the loss in the circle.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Sunday when they face St. Vincent (Pa.) and Johnson State (Vt.)
