CLERMONT, Fla. — The Ohio Northern softball team split a pair of games on the second day of its spring break trip at the NTC Games.
The Polar Bears (3-1) defeated Simmons (Mass.) 11-3 and fell to Susquenanna (Pa.) 6-5 Tuesday evening.
Against Simmons, six different Polar Bears each collected two hits to lead a 12-hit attack.
Senior All-American Kimi Blewett, senior Cassie Gaye and freshman Kelly Sheridan each had two doubles and combined for eight RBI.
Trailing 3-1, ONU took control of the game with a 6-run fourth inning, keyed by a 3-run double by Sheridan.
Northern made it 10-3 with three more runs in the sixth on a 2-run double by Blewett and a sacrifice fly by senior All-American Jackie Mangola.
Junior Katy Newman (1-0) three four shutout innings of relief to earn the win.
Against Susquehanna, the Crusaders built a 6-1 lead and held off ONU for the win.
Sheridan, Gaye and junior Ashley Sujkowski each had two hits for the Polar Bears.
Trailing 6-1, Northern scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull within 6-5.
Freshman Jamie Westinkirchner had a sac fly, Sheridan had a 2-run double and Mangola added an RBI single.
ONU had runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not push the tying run across the plate.
The Polar Bears will play Berry (Ga.) and No. 18-ranked Moravian (Pa.) on Wednesday.
