DEFIANCE — The Ohio Northern softball team swept a doubleheader against Defiance by scores of 10-2 and 7-0 this afternoon at Sal Hench Field in Defiance.
With the wins the Polar Bears improve to 9-5 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 9-11.
Game one started with a bang as junior All-American Jackie Mangola launched a 3-run homer to score fellow All-American junior Kimi Blewitt and freshman Christin Miller to put the Polar Bears up 3-0.
The home run was Mangola's team leading fifth of the season.
Junior Katie Cretin had a 2 RBI single in the third inning to put Northern up 5-1.
Defiance scored another run in the bottom of the third to bring the score to 5-2.
Over the next three innings the Polar Bears scored five runs to bring the score to 10-2 after the sixth inning.
Mangola went 2 for 3 in the game with 4 RBI's, with Cretin going 3 for 3.
Junior Maggie Molnar allowed two runs on five hits to earn the win and bring her record to 2-1.
Junior Lauren Hurd and sophomore Katy Newman each gave up a hit but allowed no runs as Northern shut out Defiance 7-0 in game two.
Hurd moves to 3-2 on the season while Newman earned her first save of the season.
Blewitt went 1 for 4 in the game two, but belted in three RBI's to lead the Polar Bears offensively.
Miller went 2 for 4 with three runs scored, while fellow freshman Bree Hiteshaw finished 2 for 3.
Northern returns to action tomorrow as they travel to University Heights to open Ohio Athletic Conference competition against John Carroll at 3:30 pm.
