BLUFFTON -- No. 3-ranked Ohio Northern extended its winning streak to 27 games with a 13-2 victory in the opening game of a non-conference double header at area-rival Bluffton Thursday afternoon at Bluffton Field.
The Polar Bears (30-2) saw that win streak come to an end in Game 2, as the Beavers (14-18) rallied for a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, senior All-American Tina Mangola and sophomore Jackie Mangola each belted their seventh home runs of the season as ONU won in five innings via the NCAA's 8-run rule.
The Polar Bears out-hit Bluffton 14-3 and batted around in both the third and fourth innings.
Senior Cortney Cash allowed only one hit in 3.0 innings to earn the victory and improve to 15-1 on the season.
In Game 2, the Polar Bears took a quick 1-0 lead on a solo home run by senior Katie Salay.
The ONU lead was 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth when four consecutive two-out singles by the Beavers plated three runs and gave the hosts a 4-2 lead.
Senior Brooke Babcock then came on and limited ONU to just one hit over the final four innings to make the lead stand up.
The Polar Bears' next contest is slated for Saturday at 1 pm at the ONU Softball Field against Ohio Athletic Conference foe Muskingum.
Because of expected inclement weather forcast for Saturday, the contest may be rescheduled for Friday at 3;30 pm.
