No. 5 Softball rallies for 4-3 victory over No. 22 North Central in NCAA Tournament winners bracket contest

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- No. 5 Ohio Northern got back-to-back sacrifice flies from sophomore Kimi Blewett and senior Tina Mangola in the top of the seventh and rallied past No. 22 North Central (Ill.) 4-3 Friday afternoon in Game 7 of the NCAA Division III Greencastle Regional Softball Tournament AT DePauw Tigers Field.
The Polar Bears tie a school record with their 39th victory and advance in the winners bracket with a 39-5 record, while the Cardinals fall into the losers brackets with a 31-13 record.
Northern will now play the winner of Friday's second winners bracket game between No. 10 DePauw (Ind.) and Transylvania (Ky.) Saturday at 2 pm Saturday.
NCC will move to the losers bracket and play No. 17 Washington (Mo.) in an elimination contest Saturday at 10 am.
Trailing 3-2 entering the top of the seventh, senior Mandi Fought led off the inning with a single up the middle.
Sophomore Jackie Mangola followed Fought's single with a sharp double that one-hopped the left field fence to put runners on second and third.
Sophomore Kimi Blewett then lined out to center to score Fought and tie the game at 3-3. Jackie Mangola advancing to third on a throwing error by NC.
Tina Mangola then put the Polar Bears up 4-3 with a sacrifice fly to deep center field.
"That was just an outstanding contest," ONU head coach Annette Shepherd said. "Both teams played very well. Our leadership really stepped up in the top of the seventh. The top four batters in our lineup just flat out got it done. Maggie (Molnar) threw the ball well. Jackie's double changed the complexion of the game. It was a big hit. Then Kimi and Tina followed with hard-hit balls to scored the runs."
The Polar Bears got on the board first in the top of the first when Mandi Fought drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on an illegal pitch.
The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame when Laura Whitfield hit a 2-run home run to center field.
Northern tied the game in the top of the third when senior Cortney Cash led off with a bunt single, advanced to second on a bunt single by Fought, went to third when sophomore Kimi Blewett drew walk and scored on a bases loaded walk by senior Tina Mangola.
North Central went up 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth despite getting two runners thrown out in the inning.
With runners on first and third and one out, Laura Constantine singled through the left side, but freshman left fielder Meghan Anten gunned down Justine Walker at the plate trying to score from second base.
Alyssa Rabulinski then hit a bloop single to right field to score Kelli Lofgren from third, but Tina Mangola threw out Constantine at third base to end the inning.
Molnar improved to 13-0 on the season, allowing just two hits in 3.0 innings of shutout relief.
