ADA -- The Ohio Northern men's soccer team claimed the annual ONU Invitational title on Saturday afternoon as it downed Thomas More (Ky.) 3-0 at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 3-1-1 overall with the victory, while the Saints drop to 2-2-0.
Senior Chris Garbig (Wilder, Ky./Highlands), junior Joseph Schulte (Copley), and freshman Zachary Yoder (Goshen, Ind./Kamiakin) led the way for Northern offensively, scoring a goal apiece.
Junior Anthony DeNoi (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) and senior J.J. Fortner (Maumee) each added assists for Northern.
After a nearly scoreless first half, Garbig was able to steal a pass from the TMC goalie and strike from 25 yards out in the 43rd minute to give ONU a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.
The Polar Bears wasted no time in the second half extending their lead, as DeNoi found Schulte with a through ball just 15 seconds into the second half and Schulte capitalized to extend the lead to 2-0.
In the 86th minute, Yoder would beat the TMC keeper with a header from Fortner's corner kick to seal the 3-0 victory.
ONU outshot TMC by an 18-15 margin and edged the Saints in the corner kick battle 8-5.
Freshman goalkeeper Dylan Plank (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim) earned the victory in the goal to improve his record to 2-0-0 on the year after recording five saves.
The Polar Bears return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 13 as it hosts Ohio Wesleyan at Kerscher Stadium at 7 pm.
