Baseball wins home opener against Asbury (Ky.) 12-0 behind impressive offensive showing

ADA — The Ohio Northern baseball team rode an impressive offensive showing to win its home opener over Asbury (Ky.) 12-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Basics

• Records: Ohio Northern (11-5 overall), Asbury (4-10 overall).

Game Highlights

• Ohio Northern took the lead early in the 2nd on a 2-run home run to right field by sophomore Evan Russ (Westfield, Ind.)
• In the 4th, Northern's offense erupted putting 6 runs across, including a grand slam by junior Chase Armstrong (Louisville, Ky./Trinity).
• The Polar Bear offense kept going on a solo homer by sophomore Devon Morris (Archbold) in the same inning which pushed the lead to 8-0.
• ONU wouldn't let up in the 6th after a 3-run home run by senior Elliott Veenstra (Findlay/Liberty Benton).
• Northern would add one more run on an RBI double by junior Sam Sells (Lewis Center/Oletangy Orange) in the 6th, which made it 12-0.
• Freshman pitcher Jack Saylor (Springboro) pitched 5 shutout innings, allowed just a single hit, and recorded 8 strikeouts on his way to picking up his team highest 3 wins. 
• Veenstra and Armstrong each led the Northern offense with 4 RBIs.
• 11 Polar Bears recorded a hit in the game.

• Ohio Northern leads the all-time series between the teams 3-1. 
• Through 16 games this season, Russ leads the Polar Bears with a .469 batting average, going 15-for-32 with 14 RBI.
• Armstrong has now recorded 94 hits in 90 games. He is also tied for 7th all-time at ONU with 20 career home runs.
• Senior Andrew Stechschulte (Findlay) has 91 hits in 102 games.
