ADA — The Ohio Northern baseball team clinched a spot in next week's Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament with a double header split against Heidelberg on Senior Day on Sunday.
The Basics
- Records: Ohio Northern (24-15 overall. 11-7 OAC), Heidelberg (23-17 overall, 9-9 OAC).
- Venue: Wander Field - Ada, Ohio.
Game 1 - L, 1-5
- Ohio Northern scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to lead 1-0, but Heidelberg would score twice in the fifth and seventh and once more in the ninth to win the opener.
- Fifth-year senior Jack Hutchins (Bright, Ind./East Central) was solid on the hill, allowing only two earned runs while striking out six in 7.0 innings of work.
- Freshman Kyler Lapp (Hall, Ill.) had one of ONU's hits and scored the lone run in the contest.
- HU out-hit ONU 10-3.
Game 2 - W, 3-0
- Northern clinched its spot in the 4-team OAC Tournament by winning the nightcap.
- Senior Noah Truax (Lewis Center/Bishop Watterson) and junior Blake Peterson (Belle Center/Benjamin Logan) combined to threw a 1-hit shutout.
- Truax (6-2) struck out 9 in 7.0 innings to get the win and Peterson threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts to earn his fourth save of the season.
- The Polar Bears scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the first when sophomore Chase Armstrong (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) scored on a ground out from senior Logan Stevens (Plain City/Jonathan Alder).
- ONU played add-on in th sixth when lapp scored on a single by Stevens, who then scored on a double by junior Andrew Stechschulte (Findlay).
- Ohio Northern out-hit Heidelberg 6-1.
Notables
- Northern will be either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed in next week's OAC Tournament, which will be Thursday-Saturday at Baldwin Wallace.
- Junior Joey Kennedy (Sterling Heights, Mich./Foley Catholic), junior Sam Sells (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) Lapp lead the team in hitting through 39 games with averages of .366, .358 and .329, respectively.
- Stechschulte leads the team with 49 hits.
- Armstrong leads the squad with 15 doubles, seven home runs, 44 RBI and a .579 slugging percentage. His 44 RBI is the fifth-most at ONU in a single-season.
- Ohio Northern is now 91-68 all-time against Defiance, including a 46-26 mark in Ada.
- Ohio Northern is in its 119th season of baseball. The Polar Bears are 1465-1152 all-time, a winning percentage of .560.
