WINCHESTER, Ky. — The Ohio Northern baseball team wrapped up its season-opening 3-game series at Asbury (Ky.) with a 10-4, 5-2 doubleheader sweep on Sunday afternoon
The Basics
- Records: Ohio Northern (2-1 overall), Asbury (4-4 overall)
- Venue: Clark H.S. - Winchester, Ky.
Game 1 - W, 10-4
- The Polar Bears rallied from a 4-1 deficit with a 9-run sixth inning to take command of the game and cruised to the 10-4 win.
- Senior Logan Stevens (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) led off the inning with a solo home run and junior Andrew Stechschulte (Findlay) followed with a 2-run shot to tie the game at 4-4.
- Northern sent 12 batters to plate in the frame, which was capped by a solo home run by freshman Kyler Lapp (Hall, Ill.), which was his second in as many games as a collegiate player.
- Junior Sam Thombs (Detroit, Mich./Lutheran) notched his first career victory, throwing .2 of an inning in relief in the bottom of the fifth frame.
- Junior Blake Peterson (Belle Center/Ben Logan) threw four shutout innings, allowing just three hits with five strikeouts, to pick up his first save of the season and the fifth of his career.
- Freshman Marco Morrison (Whitehouse/Anthony Wayne) went 3-for-3 at the plate for ONU.
Game 2 - W, 5-2
- Senior Corey Jeanor (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) and Stechschulte each hit home runs as ONU scored three times in the top of the fourth to open up a 3-0 lead.
- Lapp hit a sac fly in the sixth to make it 4-0 and sophomore Robbie Reed (Goshen, Ky./Trinity) followed with an RBI single and it was 5-0.
- The Eagles got a run in the seventh and rallied in the ninth to make things close.
- AU got two on with two out in the bottom of the last, but junior Brady Corbitt (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) got the final out to pick up his first career save.
- Junior Blake Altaffer (Montpelier) pitched seven strong innings, allowing only four hits and one earned run, to earn the win and improve to 1-0 on the year.
Notables
- The Polar Bears hit 6 home runs in the 3-game series, led by two each from Stechschulte and Lapp.
- Lapp also drove in a team-high 5 runs in his first weekend of collegiate baseball.
