ADA — Senior Jacob Wenning (Coldwater) hit his first home run of the season on Sunday as the Ohio Northern baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 19 Marietta at Wander Field.
The Pioneers won both games by identical 11-2 scores and improve to 16-6 overall and 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while dropping the Polar Bears to 12-9, 1-3.
Northern combined for 10 hits on the day, getting three from freshman Chase Armstrong (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) and two from Wenning, who added a double to his homer.
The Pioneers combined for 31 hits, including 11 of the extra-base variety.
Brett Carson paced the MC offense with seven hits, including two home runs, a triple and three doubles.
The Pioneers built an 8-0 lead in Game 1 highlighted by a 2-RBI triple from Alex Richter in the sixth inning.
Northern made it 8-2 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from sophomore Hunter Kauser (Paulding) and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Andrew Stechschulte (Findlay).
A solo homer from Carson capped the scoring in the top of the ninth.
The Pioneers staked out a 6-0 lead in Game 2 before Wenning hit his blast over the fence in left field that also plated fifth-year senior Corey McMann (Flower Mound, Tex./Liberty Christian).
Carson answered with a solo homer in the eighth, and MC added three more runs in the ninth capped by an RBI triple from Richter.
The Polar Bears return to action on Tuesday for a home game against Bluffton at 4 p.m.
