ADA — The Ohio Northern baseball team pounded out 18 base hits in a 17-6 non-conference victory over area-rival Defiance on a warm and windy Sunday afternoon at Wander Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 15-18 overall, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 7-21.
Northern had four different players with three base knocks in the game, led by senior Chayten Overholt (Delphos/Lincolnview) who was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, three RBI and three doubles.
Freshman Ethan Spears was 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run and a stolen base.
Sophomore Dakota Durick (New Castle, Ind.) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and junior Jacob Wenning (Coldwater) was 3-for-6 with three RBI, two runs and a pair of doubles.
Ohio Northern sent 14 batters to the plate in the home half of the third inning, scoring nine times, to take an 11-0 lead.
The highlight of the inning was a 2-run home run by senior Sam Zeleznik (Hinckley/Highland), his first of the season and the third of his career.
Freshman Kyle Lawrence (Valparaiso, Ind.) improroved to 2-2 on the mound by throwing five innings of 1-hit shutout baseball.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Wednesday when they host Ohio Wesleyan in a non-conference contest at 4 pm at Wander Field.
