ADA — The Ohio Northern baseball team split a doubleheader with Capital on Saturday at Wander Field as it celebrated Senior Day.
The Comets (9-23 overall, 2-12 OAC) won 7-2 in Game 1, and the Polar Bears (14-18 overall, 5-9 OAC) answered with a 12-5 victory in Game 2.
Following the doubleheader, the team recognized seniors Corey McMann (Flower Mound, Tex./Liberty Christian), Chayten Overholt (Delphos/Lincolnview), Tom Pitko (Youngstown/Austintown-Fitch), Sam Zeleznik (Hinckley/Highland) and Jon Hillberry (Lancaster/Fairfield Union) for their time with the program.
The Polar Bears ended the day on a winning note, notching 13 hits and getting five solid innings from junior Tim Knapschaefer (Maria Stein/Marion Local) on the mound.
Junior Nate Webb (Bath, Ind./Union County) and freshman Ethan Spears (Oregon/Clay) both hit home runs in the game, Overholt added a triple, and McMann and sophomore Dakota Durick (New Castle, Ind.) each hit a double.
Spears, Overholt, McMann, Durick and sophomore Logan Stevens (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) each had a team-high two hits for ONU, and Webb had a team-leading three RBIs.
Knapschaefer matched his career high with eight strikeouts over five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks en route to improving to 3-4 on the season.
After the Comets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Northern responded with three runs in the bottom of the third sparked by a 2-RBI triple from Overholt.
An RBI single from McMann and a three-run homer from Webb put ONU up 7-1 in the fourth inning.
A solo home run from Spears, his team-high eighth homer of the season, highlighted a three run fifth inning for Northern, making the score 10-3.
The Polar Bears added a run in each of the sixth and eighth frames before Capital closed the scoring with two runs in the top of the ninth.
Northern tallied seven hits, including doubles from McMann and Overholt, in Game 1, but were able to plate just two runs against Capital pitchers Connor Jones and Gavin Vanhorn.
The Comets finished with 11 hits and led 4-1 after three innings and 7-1 after six en route to the victory.
The Polar Bears return to action on Sunday for a non-conference home game against Defiance at 2 p.m.
