ADA — The Ohio Northern baseball team split a double header with Otterbein on Tuesday afternoon at Wander Field.
The Polar Bears (21-14 overall, 20-11 Ohio Athletic Conference) won the nightcap 12-10 after the Cardinals (11-19, 8-18) won the opener 5-3 in 11 innings.
Junior Corey McMann (Flower Mound, Tex./Liberty Christian) went 4-for-8 with 5 RBI to lead the ONU offense on the day. He also extended his single-season school record with his 20th double of the campaign.
Freshman Noah Truax (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) threw 3.2 innings of shutout relief in the nightcap to pick up his first collegiate victory (1-0) on the hill.
Trailing 10-5 in the bottom of the sixth, McMann slapped a two-out single through the left side to score senior Will Davis (Upper Arlington/Bishop Watterson) to make it 10-6 and give ONU much-needed momentum.
The Polar Bears then sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, scoring six times, to grab a 12-10 lead.
Truax gave up three hits in the final two innings, but did not allow a run and the Polar Bears held on to claim three of four games in the series with Otterbein.
In Game 1, Northern tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh when senior Michael Rocco (Davenport, Fla./Zionsville (Ind.)) scored on a squeeze bunt by junior Andy Mills (Cincinnati/St. Xavier).
McMann followed with an RBI single to score senior Krue Thwaits (Greenville/Milton-Union) and it was 3-2 ONU.
Otterbein had runners on second and third with two out in the top of the ninth when Brayden Carter singled to left to tie the game 3-3. Mills came up throwing and gunned down the would-be go-ahead run at the plate trying to score from second base to end the inning.
OU won the game in the 11th inning with a run-scoring triple and an RBI double to make it 5-3.
The Polar Bears have clinched a spot in the 6-team OAC Tournament May 19-22 and will wrap up their regular season with a 4-game series against Capital this weekend.
