ADA — Senior James Fisher (Castalia/Margaretta) took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and junior Corey McMann (Flower Mound, Tex./Liberty Christian) reached the 100-hit plateau to lead the Ohio Northern baseball team to a 3-2, 15-3 sweep of Muskingum on a warm and windy afternoon at Wander Field.
The Polar Bears (18-13 overall, 17-10 Ohio Athletic Conference) have now won six straight and 15 of their last 17 games after a 3-11 start to the season.
The Muskies fall to 7-16-1, 7-14-1.
Fisher (5-1) threw 7.1 innings of no-hit ball until a clean single through the left side ended the no-hitter bid in the opener.
MU then loaded the bases and scored a pair of runs on the ONU bullpen to get within 3-2 with still only one out in the inning.
But freshman Noah Truax (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) came in to get a double play ground ball to end the threat. He then kept MU off the board in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
ONU scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to build a 3-0 lead.
In the nightcap, McMann had a 2-run double in the bottom of the first inning to make him the 68th member of ONU's 100-Hit Club and give the hosts a quick 2-0 lead. He finished the day 3-for-8 and now has 101 career base hits.
Northern led 4-3 when it exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third to take a commanding 10-3 lead.
The game was called after the top of the seventh due to the OAC's 10-run rule.
ONU pounded out 15 hits in the nightcap, including home runs by senior Will Davis (Upper Arlington/Bishop Watterson), sophomore Jacob Wenning (Coldwater) and junior Sam Zeleznik (Hinckley/Highland).
Junior Tom Pitko (Youngstown/Austintown-Fitch) allowed only one earned run in 6.0 strong innings of work to improve to a team-best 6-2 on the season on the hill.
The Polar Bears will return to action with a 4-game series against Otterbein, playing twice in Westerville on Saturday and hosting a twin-bill at Wander Field on Monday.
