ADA — Senior Michael Rocco (Davenport, Fla./Zionsville (Ind.)) and head coach Gene Stechschulte reached career milestones as the Ohio Northern baseball team pounded out 29 hits and scored 24 runs in a 7-1, 17-4 double header sweep of Baldwin Wallace on Sunday afternoon at Wander Field.
The Polar Bears (14-13 overall, 13-10 Ohio Athletic Conference) have now won 11 of their last 13 games.
The Yellow Jackets fall to 14-12-1, 13-9-1.
Rocco became the 67th member of ONU's 100-Hit Club, going 3-for-6 in the double header, giving him 102 for his career.
Stechschulte reached the 200-win plateau with the game one victory. He now has a 201-151 record, a winning percentage of .571, in his 10 seasons as head coach at Ohio Northern.
In game two, ONU sent 30 batters to the plate in the third, fourth and fifth innings to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 17-4 lead.
Senior Krue Thwaits (Greenville/Milton-Union) went 3-for-5 with 5 RBI and three runs scored and was just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle in the game.
Rocco, senior Matthew Burkett (Maumee) and junior Chayten Overholt (Van Wert/Lincolnview) also had three hits in the game.
Junior Tom Pitko (Youngstown/Austintown-Fitch) got the win on the mound to improve to 5-2 on the year.
The game was called in the bottom of the seventh by the OAC's 10-run rule.
In the opener, Northern scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take a quick 4-0 lead.
Senior James Fisher (Castalia/Margaretta) pitched 6.2 strong innings with seven strikeouts to improve to 4-1.
Overholt went 3-for-4 to complete a 6-for-8 day at the plate.
The Polar Bears will return to action next weekend with a 4-game series against Muskingum.
