ADA — Senior James Fisher (Castalia/Margaretta) and junior Tom Pitko (Youngstown/Austintown-Fitch) each had outstanding games on the mound to lead the Ohio Northern baseball team to a 9-2, 2-1 sweep of Wilmington on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Wander Field.
The Polar Bears won for the eighth time in their last nine games and improve to 11-12 overall and 10-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Quakers fall to 4-18, 3-15.
Pitko (4-2) threw a complete-game three-hitter, striking out five and allowing only one unearned run as ONU rallied to win the nightcap 2-1.
WC took advantage of an error to score a run in the top of the first and it held up until Northern plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Junior Chayten Overholt (Van Wert/Lincolnview) singled home freshman Logan Stevens (Plain City/Alder) with one out to tie the game at 1-1.
One out later, junior Sam Zeleznik (Hinckley/Highland) singled home Overholt with the go-ahead run.
Pitko then retired nine of the last 10 batters to slam the door and pick up his first career complete game victory.
In the opener, Fisher (3-1) scattered 10 hits in 8.0 innings, allowing just two earned runs, to pick up the win.
The Polar Bears scored seven runs in the first three innings to grab a quick 7-0 lead and were never threatened.
Junior Corey McMann (Flower Mound, Tex./Liberty Christian) started the rally with an RBI double in the first and followed with a solo home run, his team-leading fifth of the year, in the second.
All nine batters in the ONU lineup had a base hit in the game.
The Polar Bears will return to action next Saturday and Sunday with a 4-game series against Baldwin Wallace, beginning with two games at Berea on Saturday and ending a pair of home games on Sunday.
